Tax reform: Don't be distracted by empty boasts

Re: “Republicans show details of long-awaited tax plan,” (TNT, 11/3).

As a long-time tax preparer, I can say that most people do not itemize. Nearly all the arguments I see publicized in favor of the tax plan are about deductions that benefit very few and in the end make only small differences in tax liability.

The Republicans brag about doubling the standard deduction but hide the fact that eliminating the exemption deduction basically minimizes the other. In the end the effect on the middle class from this proposed law is just small potatoes.

Of course, it is just a shell game. The only real purpose of these proposals is to donate large and significant tax cuts to the oligarchy, the wealthy and the corporations. All the rest is nothing but distraction.
