Protests: Beware making victims of Trump aides
The recent family separation program along our country’s southern border rightly brought protesters to the streets.
If you believe, as I do, that government policy and actions should be based on compassion, not punishment, then it’s totally appropriate to feel sickened and angry about the treatment of children and families seeking safety in our country. As is expressing those feelings for all to see.
But the recent personal attacks on Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen in a public restaurant and outside her home might well have unintended consequences.
She now becomes a victim, the protesters have become persecutors, and her supporters are happy to come to her rescue.
Nobody wins in that triangle, despite most believing they have.
An alternative might be a quiet, peaceful protest with signs that speak to the issues — the children, the families, the government’s behavior.
A protest that doesn’t create a victim or the need for blind rescuing.
