State Senate race: Red flags on McClendon

Re: “McClendon sorry now for remarks he made against 2016 opponent,” (TNT, 8/1).

Marty McClendon, Republican state Senate candidate for the 26th District, has a proven history of lying about his political opponents.

In 2016, he called his opponent for state lieutenant governor, Cyrus Habib, “anti-God,” “anti-life” and “Muslim” on the religious conspiracy program “Warning TV.”

The TNT article reveals that Habib is a practicing Catholic, something McClendon ought to have known.

If McClendon was willing to lie in his 2016 race, we cannot trust what he says in 2018. I find it disturbing that McClendon, a pastor himself, would use faith as a weapon against his opponent.

I’m deeply concerned that he assumed Habib was Muslim and demonized him for it because of his last name and status as Iranian American.

McClendon’s willingness to go on a religious conspiracy show to appeal to his voters also sends up red flags.

We should all be skeptical of McClendon. His campaign tactics are a fusion of lies and bigotry. Voters in the 26th district deserve an honest senator.
