Golf course: Don’t forget the non country club set
Re: “County wisely cuts its losses on golf course,” (TNT editorial, 9/14).
The editorial says “It doesn’t take an MBA to know that’s bad stewardship of taxpayer money” regarding the county’s continuing support of Fort Steilacoom Golf Course.
Yet the County will support Chambers Bay Golf Course at $6.1 million a year! Few residents are able to afford golf at Chambers Bay, while Fort Steilacoom has been a reasonable option for everyday folks to enjoy.
The editorial also mentions Fircrest Golf Club’s “steady rise in membership”. Fircrest is a private golf club; initiation and membership fees are prohibitive to many golfers.Fort Steilacoom is a viable option for those of us not in the country club set.
I would hope the county would be interested in supporting the majority of its residents in outdoor pursuits; disc golf, foot golf and nine-holes of golf at Fort Steilacoom’s wooded environs.
