Kavanaugh: Temperament should rule him out
The last day of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing was intended to allow senators to deliberate on an abuse accusation. Sadly, it evolved into a display of partisan fighting and shouting that embarrassed many of us who were watching.
It quickly became apparent that this partisan body should not be doing the job that law enforcement and a criminal court should do.
But it also inadvertently raised an entirely new question. Does Kavanaugh have the temperament to be a justice of the Supreme Court, and can he be fair when cases come before him?
His shocking opening statement and defiance of Democratic senators are certainly cause for concern.
I have heard some say that anyone accused of a despicable crime like Kavanaugh was would fight back. Maybe, but the rest of us are not being considered for Supreme Court justice.
Regardless of the validity of the assault accusations, Kavanaugh’s partisan statements will be forever linked to his future, and if he’s confirmed will greatly influence the people’s confidence in the highest court in the land.
The Senate and White House should recognize this and move on.
