Carbon tax: Carefully drafted initiative worth support

Re: “Trump to ease rules on methane release” (TNT, 9/12).

Environmental Protection Agency acting director Andrew Wheeler is continuing Scott Pruitt’s assault on President Obama’s regulations, which were drafted in an attempt to mitigate climate change.

Overall, methane is now considered to have contributed about two-thirds as much to global warming as carbon dioxide.

In spite of the Trump administration’s complete denial of the compelling evidence of climate change, voters in our state will have an opportunity this fall to pass Initiative 1631.

If passed, Washington would be the first state to put a price on carbon. A broad coalition of more than 130 statewide environmental, labor, social justice and non-profit groups support this carefully drafted proposal.

It is time for Washington to take the lead for cleaner air and a more healthy environment.
