Immigration: Tying status to farm work is modern-day slavery

Re: “Republicans vote to expand legal immigration for agriculture,” (TNT, 12/12).

I can’t begin to express my disgust over the substance of this article. I am keenly aware that we white males are totally averse to work while demanding wealth from others’ work. But to re-introduce slavery again, on its 400th anniversary, is appalling.

I see that the immigrants must have a background in and be willing to work in agriculture. I wonder what will happen if they change their minds about the kind of work they want to do, or get injured, or have family members with them. I wonder what kind of pay they will get. (Ha, ha, ha.)

I notice that they will have a “path to legality” – a very strange goal, significantly short of citizenship. I wonder how easy it will be to violate the terms of this “legality,” and the consequences.

We pride ourselves on being a Christian nation. What a joke!
