Light pollution: Bravo for local steps to reduce it

“New light pollution rules coming for Pierce County developers,” (TNT editorial, 1/8).

I was overjoyed to hear the news that Pierce County will begin to turn back the rampant light pollution that is quickly enveloping our region.

As a high school astronomy teacher of 43 years, it has been increasingly difficult to show students the beauty of a truly dark sky and instill a sense of awe and wonder when most high school students have never seen the Milky Way.

There are amazingly simple things each of us can do to bring back the night sky. A short video, “Dark skies start at home,” is an excellent resource, as is the website darksky.org.
