Mortgage debt: Why not have the Fed intervene?

Re: “Renters need pandemic aid; landlords, too,” (TNT editorial, 3/19).

Instead of dealing with individuals to provide housing relief, have the Federal Reserve work with all lenders/ mortgage holders by suspending all rents/mortgage payments for housing and small businesses until the coronavirus crisis is over.

This way they eliminate the need for the tedious bureaucracy of dealing with each individual. Relief is instant, and the Fed works with mortgage holders to make sure there is no graft.

Renters get instant relief, as do home/small business owners and landlords. The Fed can determine what is fair to the mortgage holders.
