Coronavirus: Trust experts, not miracle drugs

Re: “Health officials wrongly dismiss COVID-19 drug,” (TNT, 4/12).

Will Jones is entitled to his personal opinion concerning the use of Azithromycin and Hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 infections, but I question the wisdom of sharing his opinions with your readership in your Local Viewpoint column.

His background and training do not merit elevating his voice to the level of medical professionals who are fully trained and engaged in battling the most dangerous epidemic of our lifetimes.

Local Health Department Director Dr. Anthony Chen is a brilliant clinician and leader who has prepared for this outbreak since he started his medical training. We should listen to his voice on these matters.

If you want details on options for COVID-19 treatment, go to ClinicalTrials.gov and you will see what is being done to evaluate medication use.

Until there is good evidence for Mr. Jones’ suggested outpatient use of hydroxychloroquine, I support the recommendations of our proven leaders.

Ronald R. Morris, Puyallup
