GOP: Party’s fantasy world crumbling fast
“GOP lawmakers’ lawsuit argues for end to stay-at-home order,” (TNT, 5/7).
The Republican Party is in panic. Several Republican lawmakers are suing Gov. Jay Inslee in federal court for executive overreach.
What the Republicans are trying to do - with their flurry of lawsuits, press releases and social media posts - is hold onto a fantasy that is crumbling before their eyes, especially here in Washington state.
They can’t conceive a world in which Inslee, a liberal Democrat, who made his name as an environmental activist, is leading while President Trump, their own conservative Republican businessman, is failing.
In the minds of the ultra and neo-conservative radicals who control the party, the opposite should be happening.
According to the narrative, it’s the “makers” who are worthy of leadership, while those who place social and environmental responsibility first are illegitimate and destructive.
But between the Trump Administration’s botched coronavirus response, the president’s reported deteriorating mental state, an economy in shambles and glaring holes in our healthcare and workers programs, the utopian fantasy of the ultraconservative Right is at last being exposed.
