Special needs: Vulnerable students mustn’t be forgotten

Washington state school districts and the medical community need to work together to provide care for medically fragile and special needs students.

Schools could start by providing and extended school year (summer school) in the homes of these students. Schools could receive help from the medical community in providing this service as safely as possible.

Parents of medically fragile and special needs students are being asked to do the impossible – provide 24-hour medical care or supervision to children who need multiple people to safely care for them.

State or federal funding must be used to help the most vulnerable children in our community and their families.
