Democracy: Dying with a whimper under Trump?

Re: “Trump reactions to COVID, George Floyd prove he’s unfit,” (TNT, 6/8).

Last year a Canadian friend gave me a book, “How Democracies Die,” by Daniel Ziblatt and Steven Levitsky. To paraphrase: Democracies oftentimes end with a whimper, with the slow and steady weakening of our important institutions (the judiciary, the press, etc.).

With Donald Trump at the helm, this is exactly what’s taking place in our nation. It’s important that we are aware of this and acknowledge the consequences.

Trump’s utter and absolute disdain for anyone who dares question or challenge him or his actions is appalling, frightening and telling.

Matt Driscoll’s recent commentary relates here when he mentions the need for more of us (especially elected Republicans) to voice our concerns.

Too often we talk with friends and family regarding Trump and his conduct, shake our heads, then simply move on. By doing so, we are giving tacit approval for the weakening of our democracy.

The next time you vote, please think about what the future holds for all of us and our children.
