Name change: County first, then the mountain
Re: “Franklin Pierce unworthy of our county name,” (TNT, 6/19).
As a resident of Pierce County for over 50 years and a former student in the FP district, I support your editorial calling for a reckoning with the name that the county and school district share.
Rather than calling the places we live and teach our children by the name of a racist who promoted slavery, I’m ready for a name that we can be proud of.
Let’s go further than a history lesson and empower and support the beautifully diverse FP student population to rename the district.
That experience in making positive change could be followed by a lesson in civic activism, as we work together to change the name of the county.
Who knows, with a little more effort, maybe we can even get the true name back for the mountain that graces our skyline.
