Climate change: We can’t let ourselves be distracted

With our attention being diverted by COVID-19 and its myriad of associated problems, climate change is rapidly coming to a boil in the background.

Thanks to The News Tribune for running articles in the past week or so about the IRS approving a tax credit for carbon capture, the Washington State Ferries’ plan to add five new fully electric ferries to the fleet by 2023, the danger of a new federal rule allowing liquefied natural gas to be shipped by rail, and the record high temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit recorded in a Siberian town.

I commend Amazon’s Jeff Bezos for coming up with the novel idea to rename KeyArena the “Climate Pledge Arena” as a high-profile reminder.

Now we need to remind our distracted lawmakers to pass legislation in time to cut carbon emissions in half by 2030, as climate scientists advise.
