Police study: What a waste of Tacoma tax dollars
Re: “Tacoma to pay consulting firm up to $250K to review policing practices,” (TNT, 6/26).
Washington Ballot Initiative 940 passed in 2018, giving police an “out” if they could prove they weren’t intentionally involved in cases of deadly force. In other words it was toothless in prosecuting such crimes.
In 2015 the City of Tacoma funded a study producing “Project PEACE,” which resulted in replacing a citizens oversight group (Police Accountability Work Group) with a police self-guided oversight group.
Now we have yet another study coming, promoted by the city manager to re-invent a bad wheel and to probably put a quarter-million dollars in the hands of mostly white people.
Many of us have known all along that the only answers to police brutality are to get an initiative on the ballot with real exclusion of police immunity so true prosecutions can be had in cases of homicide.
Also to somehow get around the police union that prevents getting rid of bad policemen.
And give that $250,000 to local agencies who can deal with the problems that police can’t handle.
