Tacoma schools: Do we face crisis of confidence?

In the time of COVID-19, it’s another reminder of the inequity in public education when, startlingly, the Tacoma Public Schools superintendent accepts a sizeable raise.

At the same time, the district has outlined a bifocal plan to meet the demands of opening schools in fall 2020.

We as Pierce County taxpayers and advocates for a fair and appropriate education for all students must react.

In the interim, there appears to be no educational processes ongoing to bring students up to grade and achievement level during the summer.

When schools open in the fall, will there be a crisis of confidence? Can parents and students rely on Tacoma school leadership to maintain quality education for all?

Even in normal times, it is difficult to provide an equitable education. Can we foresee different approaches and resources?

Finally, one is left to wonder the metrics that will be used to evaluate the safety of schools and the equitable delivery of services to all.
