Marriage equality: I can’t vote for lawmaker who opposed it
Now that Pride month has ended, I am continuing my celebration by choosing to support candidates and causes that uplift and support LGBTQ+ people – people like me and many of my peers.
I am only a college student, but I remember when same-sex marriage was legalized across the country. I celebrated with family and friends, but also felt lucky to live in a state where marriage had already been legalized for years before.
I recently learned that Steve Kirby, my representative in the 29th Legislative District, voted against marriage equality in that historic vote. He said he did this because it was what his constituents wanted.
In 2012, Kirby voted against my right to marry who I love, regardless of gender.
I cannot vote for a candidate who does not unequivocally support LGBTQ+ rights. I will be voting for Sharlett Mena for state representative.
