Wilson High School: Home is where the Heart is
“Re: “Name change process underway for Tacoma schools amid racism concerns,” (TNT, 7/16).
As a 1969 grad of Wilson High School, I think eliminating Woodrow is a good idea. Fellow grads and I have talked about this and agree we don’t need to get rid of Wilson.
So what then? I was pondering the idea and it struck me out of nowhere, we need a name to make us proud. Not another politician, but something to bring the community together.
My idea? Back in the mid ’70s, two women came to the Northwest with big musical aspirations. They fought the stigma of sexism, women in business and all the other issues facing women of that era.
I had the pleasure of doing a radio interview with them the night of their first show at the High Hat Strip Club on South Tacoma Way, the best they could get at the time. The rest is history!
Ann and Nancy Wilson would represent not only young women but anyone willing to work hard. I can see the sign: “Ann and Nancy Wilson High School, the HEART of Tacoma.”
