Election: Litzenberger would bridge gaps in Senate

In the 2nd Legislative District, we are discouraged by divisive politics. As a Democrat, I value relationships with people politically different from me. Unfortunately, these bonds are being strained.

When my sister organized a meeting of Democrats and Ronda Litzenberger, Republican running for state Senate, I worried it would go poorly.

Ronda appeared to have little to gain meeting with Democrats. But by engaging with us when few politicians speak to “the opposition,” she showed respect for all, regardless of party.

Her authenticity and honesty, even when we disagreed, displayed the courage we need in leaders. Ronda gained our trust, not by walking away from her positions, but by listening to and reminding us of core values that unite us.

With widening division, our understanding of the beliefs of people different from us is distorted. Ronda has the character and passion to elevate the conversation and bridge this divide. Her experience and openness to mobilize a coalition across political parties will advance a movement of civility that we desperately need.
