Bike helmets: Ending law is based on ignorance

Re: “Repealing Tacoma bike helmet law is wrongheaded,” (TNT editorial, 8/16).

I confirm how insensible government agencies are by not mandating bike helmets. The people making these changes are ignorant of the hazards.

As an avid cyclist I appreciate the effort to build bike paths and trails, but this doesn’t eliminate accidents nor the fact that many people on bikes are ignorant of potential disaster.

Bike accidents happen quickly and usually because of lack of attention. You can be knocked off your bike by a small hole or rock, roots growing through the pavement, an animal distraction, a sudden stop in front of you, car doors.

I know of a friend who was killed when he got tangled in a dog’s leash.

Trails are used by cyclists, walkers, runners, skateboarders, strollers, etc. They are becoming more congested, especially with the increase of inexperienced riders due to COVID-19.

I see whole families riding without helmets, or kids wearing them but not their parents. Well, Mom and Dad, what kind of life will you and your family have with you or your child either dead or living as a vegetable?
