Postal Service: Blame Congress for cuts, not Trump

There is a lot in the news about the delays of mail delivery and how it may affect the upcoming election. But everyone fails to address the root cause of the Postal Service problems.

In 2004 Congress passed a law requiring the Postal Service to prefund their retirement for 75 years. That means USPS is paying retirement funds for employees that aren’t even born yet! And this money is going into the general fund and being spent by Congress.

The cost-savings plans that the Postal Service has been implementing are not new. I have been retired from the Postal Service going on two years now, and these measures I see being argued about were happening while I was working.

The Olympia plant was closed down. The Tacoma plant has been on the bubble for years. I saw numerous mail-processing machines removed from the Tacoma plant long before President Trump took office.

If Congress wants to know why the Postal Service is in the state it’s in now, they need to investigate themselves.
