Religion: Faithful people aren’t one-issue voters
Re: “I’m not the kind of Catholic who believes in Trump,” (TNT, 8/28).
Thank you for printing Dr. Ovidio Penalver’s opinion piece. He has eloquently stated what many Catholics feel and believe.
Funny how at election time, Republicans talk pro-life, then do nothing until the next election cycle when they bring it up again. And Catholics fall for it every time, including a majority of the hierarchy.
The abortion issue, as important as it is, is only one part of the many aspects of Catholic social teaching, including immigration, income and gender equality, the death penalty and social safety nets.
Should this one issue supersede all the others?
If you’re only voting against abortion, you are allowing racism, attacks on immigrants/refugees, Social Security and Medicare, the environment and the welfare of our most vulnerable citizens to go unchecked.
Fellow Catholics, read the Gospels, especially Matthew 25, then take a thorough look at your conscience before sending in your ballot as early as possible.
