School shutdown: Kids are resilient, will catch up

Re: “Closed schools are an embarrassment,” (TNT letter, 9/9).

It’s quite easy to be retired like this letter writer, sit home and second guess those who are destined for the battle.

Instead, why not organize retired teachers or subs who might feel the way you do and go teach those children who might be sent to a school?

Children are resilient; they will catch up as long as they are safe first. It might be different if Tacoma’s students were alone in this crisis, but most children will be in the same proverbial boat – that is, behind where they would have been, were there no COVID-19.

Teachers and children have the right to be safe, as do their families. Life is among the valuables we possess that are irreplaceable. Like all other valuables, it deserves to be kept safe.
