Abortion: Focus solutions on love, not threats
Re: “It’s inexcusable to gloss over abortion,” (TNT letter, 9/24).
I respect those whose number one political goal is to reduce abortion. But I would ask two things of us:
(1) Study what reduces abortions. During the term of Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court, the abortion rate was cut in half. All of the declines came under Presidents Clinton and Obama. Why is that? Let’s find out.
(2) Commit our whole selves to supporting the needs of mothers and children, before and after birth. Provide good medical care, emotional support, nutrition, healthy homes and neighborhoods, high-quality education, well-paying jobs and excellent child care.
If all we offer to families in crisis is threats of imprisonment, that is not love.
