DK Metcalf says he won’t change. Someone should make him. His anger is out of control | Opinion

DK Metcalf’s anger

When will someone in the Seahawks organization or NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell make DK Metcalf accountable for his violent behavior on the field?

Metcalf is a talented wide receiver, but in the game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he lashed out at the defender that was covering him. He hit him in the head well after the play was done. He did this same behavior to a defensive player after a game a couple of weeks ago. Coach Pete Carroll apparently had a long talk with him after the game.

Metcalf said he was really going to control himself. Well, it didn’t last long. His words are meaningless. The fines he does get from the NFL don’t phase him because he is rich.

When will the officials realize he has an issue with anger which for him turns into violence to the opposing team? His unsportsmanlike behavior needs to be addressed, and Metcalf needs to become a better example for young players in sports. Enough already.

Gig Harbor Pride flag

Recently the Gig Harbor City Council voted 5-2 to fly the Pride flag on city property during the month of June.

This vote is significant because, in my opinion, it violates their oath of office that states, in part, that council members will, “to the best of my judgment, skill, and ability, truly, faithfully, diligently and impartially perform the duties of the office of City Council member for the City of Gig Harbor.”

While there are many worthy and important social issues, the Gig Harbor City Council should not be taking sides by choosing to fly a particular flag or banner that advocates for that cause. The vote to fly the Pride flag on city property gives this flag the same stature as the United States flag and the Washington state flag. Additionally, it speaks for the citizens of the city on a social issue. The city does not have the right to speak for the citizens on any social issue, regardless of worthiness.

The Council should have maintained neutrality and impartiality.

Please consider this when you vote — and do not vote for any incumbent who voted for this policy.

Tenant rights initiative

As a local landlord, I’ve provided affordable housing in Hilltop for four years. While Initiative 1 claims to shield tenants from corporate landlords, it financially burdens small community landlords like me.

Despite below-market rates for my home in the face of inflation and substantial expenses like a $25,000 sewer line replacement, this law may force me to sell my property, removing a valuable rental asset from the community. If other small landlords who are considering the same thing follow suit, this will lower housing availability and will further increase rents on the properties that are left. This initiative hurts those it says it helps.

I empathize with renters’ challenges, having been one. However, the initiative’s proponents oversimplify the issue, dismissing credible fact-based dissent by labeling them “lies” or “corporate pandering” and invoking billionaire boogie men. The tactics are intellectually dishonest and stifle honest conversations about improving housing affordability in our community.

As a Black man, I became a landlord to uplift my family and community. Initiative 1 jeopardizes both goals. Tacoma’s existing rental protections already safeguard renters without burdening small landlords.
