ELECTION: Justin Leighton deserves Tacomans' vote

My fellow Tacomans should vote for Justin Leighton for Position 3 on the City Council. We hear much about the value of experience when applied to one’s candidacy, and much of what candidates seem to think we should value seems to fall largely into the two categories of “business experience” or “community activism.”

In large part, I endorse Leighton because I believe his experience encompasses, and exceeds, these categories. His primary purpose politically is to create the most livable community possible. This includes creating an atmosphere that fosters small, innovative businesses that thrive as well as creating opportunities for the most vulnerable in our community.

His experience as a teacher in the public school system, knowing the needs that exist there, along with his experience in transit and urban planning, will serve him well with an approach that will be more holistic than any of his rivals.

Business interests are well served on our council, and it is more than just a place to seek social justice as well. We need well-rounded, reasoned and innovative thinkers on our council. In my experience, Leighton more than meets that threshold.
