ELECTION: John Hines conveys love for city

I know John Hines as “Mr. Hines,” my civics teacher and student government adviser. We met during my senior year of high school at Todd Beamer in Federal Way where I was student body president.

My most lasting impression of Hines is his love for Tacoma. In the course of a year, he convinced me that this city would become my destiny.

I was an ambitious teenager but lacked the structure to build a vision for my future. Hines took every opportunity to share his hometown and his goals to serve her. I started to visualize myself in Tacoma; when the time came to apply for college, I chose the University of Puget Sound.

It has been six years since I was in Hines’ classroom, and much has changed. I now live in the North End with my husband, a Metro Parks employee, and we are a part of a local church. My community and my heart are in Tacoma now, and had I never met Hines I may never have come across Commencement Bay.

As his former student and now North End resident of Tacoma, I am proudly voting for John Hines.
