COUNTY: Building price is too high
As I prepare to vote, I had questions about Advisory Vote No. 1 for the proposed General Services Building. I did my homework and learned that Pierce County was not transparent with taxpayers outside of Tacoma.
The plan doubled in cost to $235 million. The cost of the parking garage is $24,000 per parking stall and $8,000 per parking slot in the open-air parking lot, and parking will still be inadequate.
To pay for the building, they plan to lay off 38 of our neighbors and friends so they can pay a King County developer millions of our tax dollars to build the building. We can’t afford to fix potholes but they can justify $235 million in new debt for a new building for our county bureaucrats?
They should listen to Assessor-Treasurer Mike Lonergan, who said there are alternatives that would save millions and still accomplish the goal to consolidate into fewer locations.
I’m also mad that Pierce County sued a citizen who challenged this project with a referendum that’s permitted by the county charter. Join me in voting no on Advisory Vote No. 1.
