DUPONT: Keep big trucks off Center Drive

Current DuPont Municipal Code 16.05.010 states: “All commercial vehicles, with or without trailers, having a gross vehicle weight in excess of 14,000 pounds shall be prohibited on Center Drive from its intersection on McNeil Street to it intersection on Palisade Boulevard.

Proposed language in the 2015 Draft Comprehensive Plan would allow truck in excess of 14,000 pounds - think tractor trailers with railroad containers - to travel the entire length of Center Drive, cutting our community in half and decreasing safety for residents.

We bike, walk, run and drive along the safe, tree-lined Center Drive, our main street. We utilize it to get to our schools, Civic Center, parks, trails and small businesses.

Commercial vehicles weighing in excess of 14,000 pounds should continue to use the DuPont-Steilacoom Road. They do not provide a benefit to our citizens’ quality of life.

The last public hearing for the 2015 plan will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 10 in City Hall. I urge all DuPont residents to attend, listen, learn and voice concerns about this and other potential changes that may affect our quality of life.
