We were disappointed to learn that the Pierce County Council defeated a proposal to engage an independent evaluation and assessment of the mental health needs and services of our community, sponsored and supported by council members Derek Young, Connie Ladenburg and Rick Talbert (Matt Driscoll column, 8-27).
Approval of this proposal, and the study it authorized, would have added valuable information to the body of knowledge necessary to address this important issue.
Fortunately, the work to meet our pressing need for mental health care in Pierce County will go forward without the council’s participation. But the council members who voted against this proposal missed an opportunity to demonstrate their concern and support for the mentally ill in our community, who represent our neighbors, our friends and our families.
