SHOOTING: NRA fought sensible gun law

Re: “Protection orders could stop some mass murders” (editorial, 10-6).

Thank you for your editorial on the Extreme Risk Protection Order (EPRO) introduced by state Rep Laurie Jinkins in the last session of the Legislature. This is a bill that can save lives; it is not about confiscating a responsible person’s gun.

The EPRO is about keeping guns out of the hands of people who should not have them.As a mental health therapist. I testified last year at House hearings in support of this bill. It indeed went nowhere in the Appropriations Committee due to House leadership blocking it because of the NRA lobbied against it.

Meanwhile the epidemic of gun violence will continue until legislative leadership has the courage to put the safety of the people ahead of the gun lobby. Our legislative leadership can do better, much better.
