Football: System needs some bowl cleaner

Re: “Task force to look at broken bowl system” (TNT, 12-10).

Everyone agrees that rankings are earned on the field, not in the polls. The bowl system is broken because there is too much emphasis on national poll rankings and too little on conference titles.

For the most part, the present 40 bowl games mean nothing except to the teams playing them because they lead nowhere. A championship playoff system should be amongst conference winners and should never be between two teams of the same conference.

Yes, the seeding of teams will be required, but that doesn’t seem to tarnish the March Madness basketball playoffs at all. Bowl games played outside these conference winners could be arranged as lesser teams and bowl organizers desire. Let’s get on with it.
