Medicare: Why won't TG change its procedures?

Re: “Tacoma General agrees to $983,000 settlement” (TNT, 12-19).

Tacoma General will pay a penalty for improper post-op inpatient admissions of kyphoplasty patients. The CEO of MultiCare denies wrongdoing and suggests the costs to defend the innocence of such actions along with the time needed to defend these actions was enough to pay close to $1 million in penalties.

I find this a difficult pill to swallow. Also troubling is that after not admitting any liability or wrongdoing, MultiCare has not made any changes in admission procedures because it was not asked to.

It seems to me that a penalty of that size is the reason to change procedures. I hope this is one of the more expensive lessons learned by MultiCare at our expense.
