YMCA: Y succumbs to special interest

I have been a member of the YMCA and have contributed financially to fundraising drives for more than 20 years. I believe that it provides significant value to the community and can make a difference in people’s lives.

However, the recent announcement about the YMCA's financial support and special attention provided to the transgender community is disturbing to me. I am considering discontinuing my membership and financial support.

Do I support providing private dressing areas for those who are uncomfortable with the current non-private options? Yes, I do. I recall being uncomfortable a few times in the past at the YMCA when undressing in front of someone who did not appear to be my gender.

Do I support providing these concessions to appease a small special interest group and encouraging this special interest group to use the facilities that I most often frequent? I do not.

I am saddened that a large portion of the mainstream is considering an extreme political candidate to change our politically correct environment. Perhaps when organizational leadership has the backbone to stand up for the many regardless of the pressure of the few (special interest groups), our country may once again feel like home.
