Guantanamo: Base is vital to our interests

A letter writer recently advocated surrendering our naval base at Guantanamo Bay and returning it to Cuba (TNT, 2-28). That would be a huge strategic blunder.

The Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico our vital to our economy. This base allows our Navy to operate in the region without having to steam to and from stateside bases, saving time and fuel. It also allows us to react if anything arises, whether political or natural catastrophe. Whether the detention facility is closed is a separate debate.

Guantanamo is a valuable asset to our national security. It would be a shame to lose it.
