Voting: Ex-offender may have right restored
Re: “Let’s stop talking about ‘dumping’ offenders” (Viewpoint, 4-24).
I appreciate the points the writer made of the barriers those released from prison face in our communities. We need to reduce those barriers, and he gave good examples of some ways we might do that.
One thing that he didn’t mention is the fact that felons who are no longer reporting to the Department of Corrections may register to vote. The restoration of voting rights law was changed in 2009, but there is little publicity of this fact.
I find that those who have lost their right to vote are appreciative of obtaining that right back and will vote. See the secretary of state’s website for more details.
