Bag ban: Tacoma should do like Hawaii does

Re: “ Placing a value on plastic bags is key to reducing consumption,” (TNT, 5/8).

I am writing from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, where we spend April and May each year. Plastic bags have been “outlawed” in Hawaii County (The Big Island) for the last three years. Few complaints and no problems. All the stores have very cheap re-usable shopping bags easily carried in a pocket, purse or briefcase. Unlike at home, I don’t forget to take my shopping bag to the store while I am here. Like everyone else, you get used to it.

Ban the bags in Tacoma! The Hawaii County Council is now considering putting an end to styrofoam containers as well. I have no doubt they will not be missed either.
