Mental health: Remove stigma, provide good care

The League of Women Voters hosted a public forum on mental health issues in Pierce County and provided information about a recently published report on the topic. We so very much appreciate the TNT’s article publicizing the forum and the editorial that followed it (5/25).

Above all, the League’s goal is to achieve what NAMI Chair Bob Winslow suggested in his comments at the forum: remove the stigma associated with mental illness; provide truly comprehensive, integrated and accessible behavioral and primary care - including supportive social services - to all, regardless of insurance coverage; and assure that the mentally ill have suitable housing.

There is more to be done, but if these primary issues are addressed by the county and state, our population would be so much better off.

Thank you again for your interest and your effort to call this work to the attention of residents. We urge the people of Pierce County to work with us in moving toward these goals.
