Election: Clinton triumph worth celebrating and mourning
This morning I congratulate and celebrate the first woman president of the United States, which Hillary will almost certainly be. It is a great achievement, a landmark in the long journey toward women’s equality in a patriarchal culture.
But I am also sad this morning. I am sad that, with the victory of the Democratic Party status quo, crucial policy issues will quietly be taken off the table: public election financing, single payer national healthcare, abolishing the “fracking” industry, breaking up and regulating global banking monopolies, and equal justice for the Palestinian people.
All these will go unmentioned in future debates between two parties that are both virtually owned by same corporate oligarchs.
