Schools: Willie Stewart grads are all-stars, too
Recently The News Tribune selected All-Star graduates from surrounding schools in the area (TNT, 6/12). Congratulations to those nominated for their efforts, and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
However, for whatever reason, the Willie Stewart Academy in downtown Tacoma was not included in the process. The past three years we have graduated more than 100 students who have all-star credentials. Many had difficulty succeeding in their comprehensive high schools, but with grit, determination and perseverance chose to continue their quests for a diploma.
The issues that previously held them back became learning experiences which strengthened character. In a different environment they found self-motivation and perseverance, learned to advocate on their own behalves, and faced down challenges to meet rigorous expectations. Not an easy option, but their all-star efforts earned them Tacoma School District diplomas.
Please join us Wednesday (June 22) in the district board room at 5:30 p.m. to witness our students graduate. You will hopefully feel proud of our students who have enhanced their futures by not letting obstacles get in their way and not giving up on their dreams. Bring some tissues.
