Soda tax: Here comes the nanny state again

Re: “Soda taxes finally find their fizz,” (TNT, 6/21).

No surprise the TNT wants to jump on the soda tax bandwagon of nannyism. One of the most crucial issues facing America today, along with plastic grocery bags.

I drink maybe two Cokes a year, but why pick on just the soft-drink industry? Why not tax candy bars or Twinkies? Or as Wall Street Journal columnist Joe Queenan writes, “I’d love to see a tax designed to deflate the sanctimony of the health-minded. Let’s hit them where it hurts and tax kale.” He goes on to say that a soda tax targets the young and the poor, and the well-heeled would only scream if you taxed Frappuccinos and iced chai.

Government officials who push these agendas should be thrown out of office. Do some real work like fix some potholes with our tax dollars. And why do I never hear how they intend to cut back spending instead of raising taxes?
