Guns: Nothing sacred about Second Amendment

Re: “Gun confiscation will happen gradually,” (TNT letter, 7/1).

I cannot agree with the writer’s conclusions, but most of all I question his interpretation of the Constitution. It’s up for debate whether or not it’s the greatest document ever written when judged against the Magna Charta and our own Declaration of Independence, to mention just two. But also, there is nothing in the Constitution that mentions the right to bear arms.

The Second Amendment is just that, an amendment to the Constitution. The Founding Fathers, in their wisdom, made the Constitution a living document, one that could be changed with the times. There are 27 amendments. There is nothing so sacrosanct that cannot be changed by the will of the people.

Wanting to change it doesn’t mean we don’t support it. On the contrary, I believe by working to change it when we feel the need, we are supporting it.
