Brexit: Editorial reveals ignorance, arrogance
Re: “Brits, yanks too alike” (TNT off the wire, 6/30).
This editorial is a classic example of why our society is so divided. It assumes, with politically correct smugness, that over half of the UK’s citizens, due to their Brexit vote, and almost as many Americans, due to their support of Donald Trump, are “unreasoning”. The elitist arrogance and historical ignorance in such a viewpoint are the reason that we are so polarized.
You don’t have to agree with the “leave” voters, or the Trump supporters, in order to understand the reasons for their support. If you have an understanding of history, human nature and current events, you can make an argument for their causes. The view that there is only one rational side to an argument, be it gun control, gay marriage, climate change or immigration, is the thing that is so badly polarizing our society.
Let us have a discussion about all the issues that separate us, but respect those you disagree with, and discard the arrogance and superior attitude that is so prevalent in our society today.
