From July 8-10, the Gig Harbor Firefighter’s IAFF Local 3390 hosted the Josh O’Neil Memorial Fill the Boot drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I was dumbfounded by the generosity of citizens in this community this year.
We have collected an average of $10,000 every year for the 10 years that I have organized this event. This year, our low-pressure tactic of standing at the side of the road allowed us to collect over $13,000 in three days at the four-way stop of Stinson and Rosedale streets.
Money collected annually by more than 280,000 firefighters in the United States and Canada helps fund worldwide research efforts to eradicate 40 neuromuscular diseases. The contributions of the firefighters also go towards MDA’s summer camps for children, professional and public health education, and other programs.
The Gig Harbor Fill the Boot campaign is named for Josh O’Neil, a Gig Harbor firefighter/paramedic’s son who recently lost his battle with muscular dystrophy. Thank you to everyone who donated this and past years.
