Trump: Trade proposal would run up prices
Donald Trump’s concept of creating U.S. jobs by imposing import tariffs would end up looking like what drug companies are enjoying in today’s marketplace. Laws previously imposed by Congress requiring the FDA to limit drug imports for our safety have created an environment of overpricing.
U.S. citizens who get their cheaper drugs illegally from Canada are not dying by the thousands. The Trump concept would create jobs, but in the long run everything he created would cost more. Any limit on competition ends up costing people dollars out of their pockets.
To avoid this situation requires trade agreements that impose restrictions on the overseas manufacturer (e.g., child labor, workplace safety, environmental pollution, etc.) equivalent to what is required in the U.S.
