Fireworks: Compromise better than intolerable status quo
Re: “Proposed fireworks rules: Speakers want peace and quiet,” (TNT, 8/19).
County Councilwoman Connie Ladenburg’s proposal to limit fireworks to July 4 was an excellent compromise for both sides — for and against it.
Many residents believe there are sufficient public fireworks displays available for residents. It is not necessary to permit personal discharge of fireworks in order for people to celebrate Independence Day.
I am opposed to all personal discharge of fireworks at any time during the year. My opinion will not change, but I am willing to accept her proposal as a compromise.
Be careful what you asked for. The choice is either a total ban or just on July 4. It is easy with today’s technology for people to record the situation and turn over the evidence to law enforcement officials. Money can change behavior if the fine is large enough.
