Washington State Apple Blossom Festival

WHAT: Billed as the oldest major festival in the state, the event began in 1919. Today, the 11-day Apple Blossom Festival includes food events, parades, car show, arts and crafts, golf tournament, rides and art exhibits.

WHEN: April 28-May 8.

WHERE: Memorial Park, Wenatchee.

FUN WITH FOOD: There will be a number of events involving apples and other food. The fun begins April 30 with a pie-eating contest. There will be an apple pie and dessert bakeoff May 8. Nearly two-dozen vendors will be selling their offerings at the Food Fair, open each day of the festival. Blossom & Brews will feature local beer six evenings during the festival.

THE PARADES: The youth parade will kick off at 11 a.m. April 30, while the grand parade will start at 11 a.m. May 7. Both parades will start at Triangle Park, then make their way through downtown Wenatchee.

SPORTING EVENTS: Those who want to be more active participants in the festival can take part in the Apple Blossom Golf Tournament on May 5. The Apple Blossom Run will take place May 7. There will be 10k and 5k runs, a 5k walk and a 1-mile kids run. Pre-register at www.wvmedical.com.

ADMISSION: Free, but there is a charge for some events.
