Hood Canal Shrimpfest

WHAT: The two-day event began in 1993 as a way of celebrating the Hood Canal spot shrimp and other local seafood.

WHEN: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

WHERE: Between the Yelvik General store and the Cove RV Park & Country Store, 251 Hjelvicks Road, Brinnon.

HIGHLIGHTS: In addition to the opportunity to eat spot shrimp, the festival includes the famed belt sander races. Decorate your favorite belt sander and bring it along to go up against other competitors. The races will be at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:15 p.m. Sunday. The live entertainment will include performances by Greg Parke, Lobo Del Mar, Eric Miller, Locust Street Taxi and Old Sidekicks. There also will be arts and crafts, vendors and children’s activities.

DIG YOUR OWN: The tides should be low enough to allow visitors to easily dig for clams and oysters on public beaches in the Brinnon area. Be sure to have a valid license from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

WHO BENEFITS: Proceeds from Shrimpfest have gone to the Brinnon School, the Brinnon Volunteer Ambulance & Firefighters Association, Brinnon and Quilcene Community Centers as well as other community projects.
