Super Bowl Preview: Five things you need to know about Super Bowl LIV

The 54th Super Bowl has its two participants, the Kansas City Chiefs from the AFC and the San Francisco 49ers from the NFC.

Over the next six days, you’re going to hear A LOT about these two teams, their franchise histories about the players and coaches that made their season special.

There are many things that will be discussed over the next week but here’s five things you need to know about Super Bowl 54.

Yes, a few QBs have played for both teams.

Let’s just get it out of the way while we’re two weeks out from Super Bowl 54. The 49ers and Chiefs have had the same quarterbacks for some time over the last 40 years. It’s almost like a six degrees of Kevin Bacon...but with just two teams and five quarterbacks.

The Bill Walsh coaching tree is on display in Super Bowl LIV

The Bill Walsh coaching tree may be the most extensive and successful in the last 30 years of the NFL. The link of the Bill Walsh head coaching tree can be extended to 32 head coaches, two of them will be on the sidelines next Sunday.

Kansas City’s Andy Reid and San Fran’s Kyle Shannahan have links from a total of 32 head coaches that have a record of 2,675-2,248-6 and a total win percentage of .543.

Reid worked as an offensive assistant under former Packers/Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren in Green Bay from 1992-1998. Holmgren was the offensive assistant in San Francisco under Bill Walsh from 1986-1991.

Kyle Shannahan worked under his father Mike while in Washington from 2010-2013. The elder Shannahan worked for George Siefert from 1993-1996, George was the longtime defensive coordinator of? You guessed it, Bill Walsh.

Father-Son Super Bowl History

We saw a brother vs. brother Super Bowl a few years back with both the Harbaugh brothers (Jim and John) taking the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII.

On Super Bowl Sunday, Kyle Shannahan will join his father Mike as the first-ever father-son duo to coach in a Super Bowl. There will be even more added history if Kyle Shannahan’s 49ers win Super Bowl LIV. He and his father Mike will become the first-ever father-son head coach combination to win World Championships.

San Francisco vs. Kansas City, the diamond version

These two cities are no stranger to going at it for the ultimate prize in sports. Back in 2014, the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals went at it on the baseball field in the World Series. The Giants won in seven games but if you talk with Kansas City Chiefs fans and KC natives, a win over the 49ers is a sort of revenge for them.

Chiefs and 49ers uniforms: Winning Super Bowl combo

Sunday’s Super Bowl will feature two winning uniform combinations. The Kansas City Chiefs will be in their standard home uniform of red tops and white pants. San Francisco will be in their standard road outfits of gold pants and white tops.

Kansas City Chiefs

San Francisco 49ers

In Super Bowls, the Chiefs are 1-0 in that look, beating the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV. The 49ers are 2-0 in the road uniforms. Those victories came in Super bowl XVI and Super Bowl XXIV. After Sunday, only one team will be able to keep their unbeaten uniform combination.
